Bali like a boss: How to make the most of your time in Bali

So, you’re heading to Bali. Lucky you! You’re in for a tremendous treat. This little island, known as the Island of the Gods, is a traveller’s paradise and for good reason. A blend of vibrant culture, rich spiritual heritage, stunning landscapes and warm tropical weather makes this enchanting island a dream destination, and no matter what you’re looking for, Bali has something for everyone.

There’s so much to see and so many experiences to be had, and here’s how to make sure you get the most out of your trip.

Plan ahead but stay flexible

Whether you’ve got a few days or a couple of months to work with, it helps to have at least a loose itinerary of where you want to go. Despite the island’s size, traffic and other transportation challenges can make getting around very time consuming. Take this into consideration when deciding how long you want to spend in different locations and when timing your journey so that you give yourself enough time to enjoy it all.

Start by prioritising key destinations that align with your interests, some top ones are Ubud, Uluwatu, Canggu, and Nusa Penida. Each area has its own energy and offers a different experience with many hidden gems to be discovered along the way, so you may find yourself wanting to adjust your itinerary as you go. We recommend staying open and flexible, this is your holiday, and you get to decide how you want to spend it.

Get on top of getting around

You have many transportation options to choose from in Bali. When you first arrive or are changing locations, you’ll likely need a car to accommodate your luggage, depending on the kind of packer you are. But the best way to get around in Bali is, hands down, on a scooter. To book a car or scooter ride, you can use ride-hailing apps like Grab or Gojek, and you have the option to link your account to your credit card or pay cash. The prices are fixed and very affordable, and the service is extremely convenient, do tip your drivers because they work really hard.

You don’t have to order them online, you can choose to take a ride from the drivers who wait on the street and offer them, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with this but you will need to pay cash and there may be some haggling involved. While Grab and Gojek are available all across the mainland, it isn’t an option on Nusa Penida. It’s also important to note that they are restricted from entering certain areas when ordered through the app, and this can make getting back from the beaches in Uluwatu a small challenge, but there are usually locals who will provide the service for a fee.

If you’re a competent rider, renting a scooter will give you the freedom to explore the island at your own pace and reach places off the beaten path. There are many rental shops around, and your accommodation is likely to either offer scooter rental or can help you organise one. Bear in mind that traffic can get pretty crazy, and the roads can be quite confusing, so be patient, take it slow and use your hooter often.

Another option is to hire a local driver, and we definitely recommend doing this in places like Ubud and Nusa Penida where the top spots are spaced out. Most of the local drivers are also very good tour guides, and not only will they have a good idea of how much you can fit into your time and guide you on where and when to go, but they offer insights into Balinese culture. Plus, you’ll be supporting the local tourism economy that keeps Bali and its incredible people going.

Embrace all things local

The Balinese are some of the friendliest people you’ll ever encounter and their entire culture is based on the Hindu principles of karma. Understanding and respecting this culture will absolutely enrich your experience. Observe and participate in local ceremonies, visit temples, learn about the gods and the importance of the land, and interact with locals. You won’t be sorry if you do. Most importantly, this will help you respect the people and their cultures in this place that is so sacred to them.

While English is widely spoken, learning a few basic phrases in Bahasa Indonesia can enhance your interactions and is another way to show respect for the local culture. Interestingly, the locals also speak Balinese in addition to Bahasa Indonesia, an entirely different language unique to the island.

Definitely try the local cuisine because you don’t want to miss out on the culinary delights Bali has to offer. Try local dishes like Nasi Goreng, Babi Guling, and Sate Lilit. Visit local warungs (small eateries) for authentic experiences. Because of the importance of tourism, there are many western cuisine options to choose from as well, but there are flavours completely unique to Bali that are worth tasting.

Take good care of yourself

Do balance adventure with relaxation. While it’s tempting to pack your itinerary with activities, especially with so many on offer, make sure to schedule downtime to relax on the beach, indulge in a spa treatment, or simply enjoy the island’s natural beauty. We also suggest you try to limit your screen time to fully immerse yourself in the experience. Use digital maps and guides when necessary but remember to enjoy the moment.

Bali’s tropical climate can be intense and you will be sweating a lot of the time. It’s imperative to stay hydrated so be sure to carry water with you, and if you need an electrolyte boost, a fresh young coconut is never far and will do the trick. Also make sure you wear sunscreen, and use a hat or umbrella to protect yourself from the sun.

It's a good idea to take some activated charcoal with you. Bali Belly is very much a thing, caused by consuming contaminated food or water, and can put you out of action for anywhere from one day to a week. Activated charcoal can help mitigate the effects and have you back on your feet sooner. Pharmacies also carry remedies for this condition, should you be unfortunate enough to get it.

Bali’s allure lies in its diversity. Whether you’re seeking adventure, spiritual growth, or simply a place to relax, Bali offers it all. The island’s unique blend of natural beauty, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality creates a travel experience that is truly unforgettable. The spiritual energy, combined with the breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural experiences, makes Bali a destination that not only captivates the senses but also touches the soul.

In conclusion, making the most of your time in Bali involves a mix of planning and embracing the island’s laid-back vibe. Whether you’re exploring ancient temples, surfing world-class waves, or simply watching a spectacular sunset, Bali has a way of leaving an indelible mark on your heart. So, pack your bags, embrace the adventure, and get ready to discover why Bali is one of the world’s most beloved travel destinations.
